Bayern coach Julian Nagelsmann had put on an attacking trio of Leroy Sané, Sadio Mané and Kingsley Coman in the Bundesliga top game. Thomas Müller initially sat on the bench in the An der Alten Försterei stadium. Manuel Neuer, who paused in the cup game at Viktoria Köln, returned to the record champions’ goal. Nagelsmann relied on Dayot Upamecano and new signing Matthijs de Ligt for central defence.

At Union, coach Urs Fischer replaced the injured Diogo Leite with Paul Jaeckel a week after the record win at Schalke 04. Captain Christopher Trimmel replaced Niko Gießelmann in the starting eleven. Striker Jordan Siebatcheu (muscular problems) and midfielder Janik Haberer (private reasons) were not in the squad. They were replaced by Kevin Behrens and Andras Schäfer.
