The previous director of the Gropius Bau in Berlin, Stephanie Rosenthal, is moving to the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Project. From September 1st, as director, she will play a key role in shaping the development of the museum in the United Arab Emirates, according to a statement in Berlin on Friday. At her own request, she is not extending the contract, which ends in January 2023.

The art historian has been at the helm of the exhibition center since 2018. In Die Zeit, for example, she realized the highly acclaimed retrospective with works by the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama and a group exhibition on the subject of masculinity. In 2019 Rosenthal chaired the jury at the Venice Art Biennale.

Minister of State for Culture Claudia Roth (Greens) described Rosenthal in a statement as a figurehead for the Gropius Bau and Berlin’s art scene. With her team, she “modernized the Gropius Bau at great speed and turned it into a hotspot of contemporary discourse on art and society”.
