Supporters of the right to abortion want to protest nationwide on Saturday against the imminent overturning of the landmark decision “Roe v. Wade” demonstrate. With this law, the Supreme Court enshrined a constitutional right to abortion in 1973. Now this could be overturned.
Among other things, protest marches are planned in the major cities of Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York and Washington. “We’re expecting hundreds of thousands of people to attend,” said Kelley Robinson of Planned Parenthood. Hundreds of other events are also planned across the country.
“We will express our outrage across the country,” said Robinson, whose organization operates numerous abortion clinics. “We don’t have the luxury of wasting time. We act now.”
Rachel Carmona of the Women’s March organization said the May 14 demonstrations were just the beginning. “It’s going to be a summer of anger.”
The news portal “Politico” published a pierced draft judgment by the US Supreme Court last week that would abolish the nationwide fundamental right to abortion. The conservative majority on the Supreme Court wants to overturn the fundamental right to abortion that has been in force for almost 50 years.
The revelation was met with outraged reactions from women’s rights organizations and politicians in President Joe Biden’s Democratic Party. Immediately after the publication of the “Politico” report, demonstrators gathered in front of the Supreme Court in Washington.
The Court confirmed the authenticity of the draft judgment, but at the same time emphasized that it was not yet a final decision. The verdict is expected at the end of June.
An end for “Roe v. Wade” would give the states a free hand in abortion laws. Around half of the 50 states are likely to abolish or severely restrict the right to abortion as a result.
