Another 17/12/19 “Russian flu”: why is this called the epidemic of the deadly disease in the USSR

With the onset of the first frost in 1977 in the Soviet Union there was an outbreak of an unusual flu, in a strange way takes the lives of children and young people up to 25 years.
This fast-spreading airborne virus soon crossed the borders of the Soviet state, becoming the cause of the infection and the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people in different countries of the world. Since the first deaths from it were registered in the Khabarovsk and Vladivostok, and the type of emergency defined in the Moscow scientific research Institute of Virology, he received the name “Russian flu”.

Jeronski the flu

In fact, the “Russian flu”, like most of his predecessors, was born in the vast Central and South-East Asia. In the spring of this strain was rampant in southern China, from where he moved to Japan, and then appeared in the far East of the USSR. Unlike their Asian counterparts, Soviet doctors have sounded the alarm, and finding the structure of origin and sent to laboratories of different countries data are relative of this virus.

the structure of the flu

After medical analysis of the selected virus, Soviet scientists came to the conclusion that its structure has been mixed. At the initial stage of development of “Russian flu” was generated by two viruses, A/H3N2 and b, while in the autumn-winter period it was caused by three serotypes — A/H3N2 , A/H1N1 and B.
as a result of etiological research, it was found that this flu was very similar to the “Spanish flu” in 1918-1920 caused the death of more than 42 million people, and the epidemic circulating in 1947.

Dealing with problems of Virology Dmitry Lvov argued that the strains of the “Russian flu” contributing to the epidemic of 1977, on several key properties were identical to viruses that Soviet researchers in 1975 found in the kits near Antarctica. Having identified that a number of whale virus genes were similar to genes of avian influenza virus, it is suggested that carriers of influenza, so they said are feathered. According to him, the whales are infected by eating plankton, sprinkled with droppings of birds, which is, in fact, contained a virus.

a Feature of a pandemic

the First feature of the epidemic of the “Russian influenza,” according to virologist Tatiana Ilyicheva, connected with the main contingent of his defeat.
Generations of people who in the past have been infected with similar viruses and successfully coped with them, “new flu” of 1977 was not dangerous, because in their body contained antibodies against this strain. That is why the main target of the “Russian flu” was not previously in contact with the virus serotype H1N1 and had no immune to it’s youth.
Despite the fact that 30-year-old individuals at that time was more than 50% of the total population, the proportion of morbidity in this age category did not exceed 20%, not to mention the Mature and the elderly, where the epidemic is practically bypassed.
In his research molecular biologist Sergey Netesov said the second feature of the “Russian flu”, which was a relatively easy course of the disease. Only 42.2% of the cases, doctors had been diagnosed, indicating moderate severity of the disease, while 57.8% of the patients suffered the flu in the form of light.

Operation

the Finnish Professor of Virology Calle of Saksela expressed the opinion that the epidemic of the “Russian flu” was not a natural but an artificial nature, which has made the hands of the Soviet researchers.
According to his assumption, it was the result of recombination or mixing of viruses for a long time kept in the vaults of the laboratory. Saksela suggested that the generated virus could be either an incorrect test vaccines or biological weapons.
