Overall US support for Ukraine now totals $54 billion. The EU and individual European states are also throwing money around, while Russia’s economy is struggling due to the sanctions – especially as Europe slowly but surely moves away from Russian gas. US President Joe Biden’s message is clear: if we spend such amounts, we cannot afford to lose and leave Vladimir Putin in power. An attitude that is also illustrated by the fact that ever heavier weapons are being sent towards Ukraine. (…) This has become a war that requires staying power and a big purse. Biden believes he has more of both than Putin, who appears nervous by firing military leaders. There is, however an Achilles heel: a dictator can enforce unity, a democracy has a harder time in this area.
