Doctor President Klaus Reinhardt calls for stronger barriers against harmful alcohol consumption. “We need an advertising ban for alcoholic beverages,” said the President of the German Medical Association during a week of action on Monday.

Alcohol causes around 74,000 deaths every year. “Policymakers can no longer ignore this sad fact. They must finally take effective action to reduce alcohol consumption.”

There are already restrictions on alcohol advertising, including with regard to children and young people.

“Alcohol is omnipresent in our society, but its downsides are easily forgotten or repressed,” said Reinhardt. “Alcohol consumption is always risky.”
