After finding the missing eight-year-old Joe from Oldenburg under a manhole cover, the police are investigating in different directions. It is still unclear how the boy got into the sewer system, a police spokeswoman said on Monday.

The investigators are hoping for help in clarifying this question from a specialist company that sent a robot with a camera into the sewer system on behalf of the police on Sunday. This should trace the path that Joe might have taken.

“The evaluation is not yet available to us,” said the police spokeswoman on Monday afternoon. According to her, the child is still being cared for in the hospital. The boy has not yet been questioned by the police.

The mentally disabled eight-year-old was reported missing on June 17. After eight days of an intensive search, a walker heard a soft whimpering from the direction of a manhole cover on Saturday morning and dialed the emergency call. When emergency services opened the heavy lid just a few hundred yards from Joe’s childhood home, they found the boy.

According to police, he appeared unharmed but had a cold. Sniffer dogs had also previously been deployed in the area. Because the child likes to play hide-and-seek, a search was initially made for him in old clothes containers and under parked cars. Six days after Joe’s disappearance, the police set up a homicide squad based on a tip from a witness.
