The EU medicines agency EMA is examining the approval of a booster vaccination for children aged five to eleven years with the corona vaccine from the manufacturers Pfizer and Biontech. The authority announced on Wednesday in Amsterdam that a corresponding application had been made by the manufacturer. So far, the third dose with this preparation has been approved in the EU for children over the age of twelve.

In the United States, the FDA gave the green light for the booster vaccination for five to eleven year olds on Tuesday. Test series have shown that the boosters are also safe in this age group, the FDA said.

The EMA experts make their recommendation after examining all the data and weighing up the advantages and disadvantages. It is unclear how long the test will take. However, the authorities of the EU member states decide for themselves whether a booster vaccination should be offered for children at all.
