In Berlin-Köpenick, a restaurant on a sports ground caught fire on Sunday morning and, according to the fire department, burned down completely. No one was injured, a fire department spokesman said. It was therefore a wooden building. Shortly before, there had been “two smaller fires” on the property on Wendenschloßstraße. A mobile toilet and a shed had burned. “During the extinguishing work, the fire at the restaurant was discovered,” said the spokesman.

The sports area is used by the Köpenick football club, as a club spokesman confirmed on Sunday. A total of around 120 firefighters were on site, said the fire department spokesman.

The proximity to the Vattenfall company was a major challenge. “There’s a big oil tank there. We were able to prevent the flames from spreading.”

Two other buildings on the sports field were spared from the flames. After the fire on Sunday morning, all that was left of the 600-square-meter restaurant was a black skeleton. The fire brigade was still busy putting out the fire.

The cause of fire was unclear for the moment. “A fire department will deal with it during the day,” said a police spokeswoman. (dpa)
