The Bundestag has approved the federal budget for the current year. Marked by the Ukraine war and the corona pandemic, new debts of 138.9 billion euros are planned.

The Bundestag had previously lifted the debt cap on the federal budget for the third year in a row. With the chancellor majority of the SPD, Greens and FDP, the Bundestag again suspended the debt brake anchored in the Basic Law on Friday. This was necessary because the federal budget for 2022 provides for additional debt of almost 139 billion euros.

The borrowing permitted under the debt brake is thus exceeded by around 115.7 billion euros. The Basic Law allows this in an “extraordinary emergency situation”.
