for anybody not a secret that the KGB was a patron of many Soviet artists. So notorious General Bobkov has helped Alla Pugacheva, Maya Plisetskaya, and other stars. Was no exception and Vladimir Vysotsky. That’s just more bard, favored Yuri Andropov. Thanks to the Chairman of the Committee of state security Vysotsky remained at large and all at home.

Vysotskiy as the ACE of the KGB Chairman

Even before Yuri Andropov took over the post of the Secretary-General, he became one of the most important figures in the Soviet political arena. He was a member of the Politburo, got the General rank and in 1967 held the post of head of the most influential structures of the state security Committee. According to Fedor Razzakov, the author of the book “Why not go out of the Soviet “star”” in the second half of 1970-ies Andropov finally decided on a new goal: he plans to replace Leonid Brezhnev. To achieve this goal Andropov had not only to discredit his entourage and put the fear into the party elite, but also to enlist the sympathy of the people.

Vladimir Vysotsky was truly a crowd favorite and such a fighter against the Soviet regime. The bard considered as such even abroad. At least, so says Zinaida Ageeva, the author of the book “I treated Vysotsky”. And due to the fact that at that time was in power Brezhnev, many were convinced that Vysotsky is opposed to him. Therefore, the relationship between Andropov and Vysotsk can be called mutually beneficial cooperation. Proof of this can be the fact that Yuri has provided artist assistance even when he didn’t ask for this and sometimes didn’t.

the Conversation with Suslov and Brezhnev

So, if you believe Roy Medvedev, the author of the book “Political portraits: Leonid Brezhnev, Yuri Andropov”, shortly after the writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn was expelled from the Soviet Union, that is just in the mid 1970-ies, Yuri Andropov announced that he has to arrest of Vladimir Vysotsky. Although Fedor Razzakov asserts that the office of Mikhail Suslov did not offer to take the bard into custody, but simply to expel him from the country. The more similar the experience has been like in the Soviet Union (the same Solzhenitsyn), and abroad: in 1976, he was deprived of citizenship of the GDR “German Visotsky” wolf Biermann.

anyway, to deal with Vysotsky Andropov did not want to. Yuri together with his Deputy Viktor Chebrikov long thought, what to do, and in the end decided just to meet with Leonid Brezhnev and Mikhail Suslov. It is not known how, but, according to Medvedev, the KGB managed to convince the Secretary General and “gray cardinal” Suslov to abandon the persecution of Vysotsky. However, Brezhnev and Andropov, Chebrikov probably have coped with ease: the work of Vladimir Vysotsky was fond of the daughter of Leonid Brezhnev, Galina, and the head of the country from time to time listened to his songs.

did Vysotsky to leave?

Perhaps one of the arguments of Yuri Andropov was the fact that Vladimir Vysotsky was not going to escape from the Soviet Union. At least in the song Vysotsky “Not me – I left Racey” were these words: “And do not expect – I will not leave!” However, Alexander Galich wasn’t planning to leave the country and also chanted: “Leave! And I will…”, but still, even forced, emigrated. If we compare the two bards, that Vysotsky could be considered more “unreliable”. The fact that Vladimir Semenovich was married to a French citizen Marina Vlady and, according to Yuri Sushko in his book “Vysotsky. On the edge”, actually lived in two capitals: Moscow and Paris.

But that’s not all. Some hope Vysotsky pinned on the United States. The historian Boris Sokolov, author of the book “Suicide of Vladimir Vysotsky. “He died himself”” writes that the artist was going to go to the United States for at least six months. Overseas Vysotsky wanted to try his hand in Hollywood, and wanted to recover from drug addiction which has plagued me the last few years of his life. According to Fedor Razzakov, Vysotsky was not only French but also American passport. The latter was issued in the name of Vladimir Semenovich Shutsmana.
